The Satsuma Kiriko is a special craft which requires a long apprenticeship.

The high crystal glass varies in thickness from 1 mm to 3 mm and in color from clear to blue from being very finely cut into the pattern resembling an owl.
The Owl is a symbol of fortune, meaning that good luck will come naturally without struggle. This is due to the fact that the eyes of the owl can see even in the dark, and carries the purpose of bringing light to the world.

薩摩切子とは、研究の末に出来上がった美術工芸品です。                
透明度の高いクリスタルガラスに色ガラスを厚く（１～３mm）被せ、細かなカット模様を施したものです。 ふくろうは「福来郎」「不苦労」などどいった縁起のよい当て字が充てられ 「福が来る」「苦労がない」などを願った縁起物として愛されています。フクロウは夜行性で夜目が利くことからも「世間に明るい」などの意味もあります。
